The wife of a Spartanburg County sheriff's deputy was accidentally shot Saturday during a concealed weapons permit class instructed by another deputy.

     Deputy Calvin :Skip" Smith ----------->
"Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day"

Deputy Calvin “Skip” Smith was showing another student in the course how to properly grip her gun when it discharged, and Crystal Smith (no relation), who was standing beside the other student on the firing line, was shot, the bullet passing through Crystal's arm and entering her side.

Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright said Smith, a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division certified Concealed Weapons Permit Course instructor, was unaware a round had been chambered into the pistol.

“This is just a very unfortunate accident, and we're very thankful nobody lost their life,” Wright said. Read more;

Disclaimer: There are some outstanding police officers in this country. Some of my family members are police officers at the local and state levels.

But here in a classroom setting, cops are accidentally shooting each other. No wonder their reckless and oftentimes criminal behavior is accepted on the streets by those authorities which govern and supervise them.

I recently read two seeds on the vine regarding misbehaviour by cops. One was about a cop in Milwaukee who responded to a 911 call and then raped the victim who made the 911 call. Medical evidence showed the rape occurred and the DA refused to prosecute. The officer was later fired for substandard performance.

I just finished reading a seed about a cop in Seattle who randomly arrested a young black man on the streets for alleged robbery. The officer was caught on film saying it didn't matter that he was innocent, he would make "stuff" up. No charges against the illegal arrest, the young has filed suit in civil court.

Law Enforcement is important for the protection and safety of the communities they serve. But cops really need to get their act together, especially when training in classrooms.

It takes one time of Not doing each step with a gun to hurt or kill someone, even when it is a Professional handling the gun.

Smith, a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division certified Concealed Weapons Permit Course instructor, was unaware a round had been chambered into the pistol.

(?!)

Didn't I just seed an article about a Pastors daughter being accidentally shot in the head ..... because a gun owner did not realize there was a bullet in the chamber?

click, click, search, search .....

Oh yeah, ....here it is; Pastor's Daughter Accidentally Shot in Head inside Florida Church

Then while seeding this article, I came across another "I didn't think it was loaded" story; Man Brings Gun to Party, Accidentally Kills 20 Yr. Old Woman

Now, I certainly don't think we need to abolish the 2nd amendment, but we do need to do more to insure the safety of people around those that are exercising their 2nd Amendment Rights.

    Jerry

I just finished reading the two seeds you referenced. Sad stories. Especially for the two victims. IMHO, there is absolutely no reason to take a handgun to church. And if it's necessary to take a handgun to a party, the reason for not going to the party should outweigh any reason for going.

... but we do need to do more to insure the safety of people around those that are exercising their 2nd Amendment Rights

    Agreed.

    Charged with what?

Illegally Discharging a Firearm would probably be dismissed because the defense will say it was an accident. Criminal Negligence? Maybe, ....it would be up to the D.A. to decide if they could make it stick.

But this guy should certainly loose his certification as an instructor, and be subjected to disciplinary action.

Hold up now! On the other post you seeded, about the shooting at the Church, you went on and on about how they needed to be charged for the gun accidently going off. I said they shouldn't, as it was an accident. You said they should be.

What makes this case any different? And for Christs sake, this was an Instructor!

Remember these words? You should, as their yours.....

IMO, anyone that injures a person as a result of the incorrect handling of a firearm should be charged with reckless endangerment.

It's a different case. The nit-wit at the church should not have a loaded gun in the building under those circumstances, period.

The nit-wit instructor was at a gun safety class where a loaded gun would be expected. The fact that he is an instructor makes the shooting ridicules, for sure, however the irony is, that because he is an instructor and was expected to be handling a loaded firearm in an instruction class it is likely he would have any criminal charges dismissed. Therefore it is unlikely the DA would attempt to bring charges.

Don't get me wrong Scream, I too would like to see the @!$%# get charged, but I'm being practical in expressing my expectations rather than my wants.

Actually Jer', I don't think this clown should be charged either. (I still say the moron at the Church shouldn't be charged.)

Instructor or not, the fact of the matter is mistakes happen in life sometimes. Sure, it was dumb as @!$%#. But in no way was he showing any type of malicious intent or showing off or anything like that. He just @!$%#ed up totally by accident.

    Sometimes @!$%# happens.....

    Sometimes @!$%# happens.....

Like backing over one of your kids in your driveway?

    Some "accidents" should never happen.

I had a driving instructor once tell me "There is no such thing as an 'accident', there only 'collisions' as result of someone making a mistake."

IMO, anyone that makes a mistake resulting in the bodily harm of another person should be charged with negligence.

Always treat a gun as if it is loaded i.e. has a round in the chamber. This guy is a moron and should lose his position and be sued for his carelessness. DUH! First and most important rule for anyone learning to shoot a firearm. I have been shooting guns since I was 10 years old. My daughter just go her concealed carry permit. Thank goodness most gun owners are not like this moron.

I'm sure my opinion will be unpopular here, but perhaps it's time to reevaluate the 2nd Amendment. Times change, and so do the needs of the population. The United States of 2012 is a very different place than the nation was in 1791. The average modern citizen doesn't need to hunt to feed their family, nor do they need to protect their frontier homestead from roving bands of hostiles. I would be in favor of much more restrictive gun laws if they are well written.

I am a gun owner, and I come from a family of gun enthusiasts. I grew up around firearms, and I had respect for their deadly force drilled into me daily. I also realize that there is no requirement for a gun owner to have the level of training I've received.

I would rather give up something I enjoy and make our society a safer place, than selfishly cling to my guns and continue to read about senseless accidental firearm deaths. No amount of potential enjoyment, or potential protection is worth an actual human life.

    Your right.

Rethinking the 2nd Amendment is out of the question.

Our right to bear Arms is the one single Amendment that should never be changed in any way.

It's the only law we have that keeps our own Government in check to some degree.

No way we even think about touching it. I know this. The Government would be prying my guns out of my cold dead fingers and thats the only way they would ever get them......

It's the only law we have that keeps our own Government in check to some degree.

...except for the fact that we are governed by our own citizens. As someone who served in the Army during wartime, I can assure you that you wouldn't last 15 minutes in a firefight with experienced killers. If our own military turned on its citizenry, we would be nothing more than a speed-bump. So stop fooling yourself.

No way we even think about touching it. I know this. The Government would be prying my guns out of my cold dead fingers and thats the only way they would ever get them......

Closed minds have never accomplish anything of value. You seem fixated on an outdated mentality. Why don't you act like an adult, and set your guns aside willingly? You don't need them. No one wants to kill you and take your stuff. Your attitude is bellicose, and overly hormonal.

    ZEN:

And you and your attitude is flat out dangerous. And anybody else who thinks like you do is dangerous to everything American.

Because you call something outdated doesn't make it so. Jesus man, what Universe do you live in? And tell me this.

Just how do you propose you would protect yourself if necessary?

"Excuse me for a few minutes Mr Robber/Killer/Rapist. I need to wait for the Police to come. Sit tight for a second".

Good luck with that. You'll be DEAD or RAPED before anybody get's there to help you. No need for them. @!$%#.

You don't need a Smart Phone either, but I bet you have one.

Theres alot of things you don't need, but still have. And it's better to have it if needed, than to need it and not have it. In the end, you are entitled to your own beliefs in the matter.

    I just THANK GOD that you and people like you are in the Minority in this Country. So you stick to yours and I'll stick to mine and we'll let God sort it out.....;

The United States of 2012 is a very different place than the nation was in 1791.

    It certainly is.

Early Americans were not faced with an oppressive, overbearing police force, armed to the teeth with batons, tear gas, military caliber assault weapons, body armor, gas masks, helmets, armored personnel carriers, tanks and an "I can kick your ass and get away with it" attitude.

Disarming the Citizens is the 2nd step in Total Governmental Control.....

That is exactly what Adolf Hitler did when he gained control of the Nazi Party in 1933.

And it is exactly the reason why we must protect the 2nd Amendment, lest we lose the Rights guaranteed to us in the 1st Amendment (not mention all the rest of our Constitutional Rights).

Btw, I like those "randomly capitalized words" Scream, it makes it more of a Decree than a statement.
